Watching Young Musicians Find Their Sound (and Themselves)

There is a distinct kind of magic that happens in music education right around the six-week mark.

Today marked my fourth session working with a local high school ensemble. Six weeks ago, we were strangers feeling out a new dynamic. Today, something clicked—and the shift in the room was undeniable.

As an educator, there is nothing quite like watching that collective lightbulb turn on. Over these few short weeks, the transformation across the room has been remarkable. Tones that were once hesitant are filling out with warmth and resonance. The ensemble skills—the subtle art of balancing sound and adjusting pitch in real time—are rapidly sharpening.

On a technical level, the wins have been explosive:

• Expanding Range: Most players have pushed their upper register up by about a fourth.

• Unlocking the Low Register: The lower valve register is opening up across the board, with multiple students landing true pedal tones for the very first time.

• Rapid One-on-One Breakthroughs: Whenever I get a few moments to pull a student aside for individual coaching, their trust and buy-in are absolute. They process feedback instantly and make physical adjustments on the fly.

That momentum highlights what makes teaching high schoolers so deeply rewarding. Young people at this age possess an astonishing capacity for musical growth, but more importantly, high school is the precise window where an activity transitions from something a student simply does into a core part of who they are.

When a teenager realizes they can break past a physical wall on their instrument, unlock a sound they didn’t know they had, and hear the immediate ripple effect across the entire section, something shifts inside them. Music stops being just another period on their class schedule—it becomes an anchor for their identity and self-belief.

To guide young musicians during this critical season of self-discovery, helping them discover capabilities they didn't know they possessed, is a profound privilege. The real breakthrough isn't just in the pedal tones or the higher notes—it’s watching them step into who they are becoming.
